I’m caught in the middle of a nightmare, a drama that I never wanted to be part of. I am the Editor-In-Chief and owner of Elk Grove Tribune. My news media site Elk Grove Tribune posted two Op-Eds. One was by Linda Vwj, Mayor Steve Ly’s former campaign manager, and one was the response Op-Ed by Mayor Steve Ly. Since then my family has been threatened and harassed, I’ve been intimidated by a Hmong clan, and I had a miscarriage. I filed a report with EGPD. I AM SCARED OUT OF MY MIND, WORRIED, AND DEVASTATED!! THIS IS NOT THE ELK GROVE I KNOW!!
Elk Grove Tribune runs Op-Eds all the time. Regardless of political affiliation, we really try to run all points of view. So when we were contacted by Linda Vwj, I really didn’t think much of it. I had actually been taking some time off because I was nauseous and nobody knew I was pregnant yet.
Linda Vwj’s Op-Ed is here: elkgrovetribune.com/op-ed-mayor-steve-ly-sent-hmong-men-threaten-me-into-silence/.
Mayor Steve Ly’s Op-Ed response is here: http://elkgrovetribune.com/op-ed-response-mayor-elk-grove-steve-ly-condemning-threats/.
The day Linda’s Op-Ed ran I received a threatening phone call.
Me: Hello, this is Jax.
Man: Hi Jax. I’m calling for one reason. You need to take down that shit about Steve Ly.
Me: I’m not going to do that.
Man: If you don’t shit’s going to go down with you and your daughters.
Me: Is that a threat?
Man: It’s a fact.
Me: Ok, we’re done here. I will be reporting this to the police.
I did what I was supposed to do. I filed a police report. I called EGPD and Officer Gushchin came to my house took down my report. The next day someone from a Hmong clan called and tried to talk to me. I felt very intimidated. The man who called insinuated that because my last name and theirs shared the same Chinese character that I should talk to them. I firmly but politely told them that I was not a part of the Hmong clan system and I did not mean any disrespect to his clan but they have no part in the decisions I make in my life, with my work, and with my family. Furthermore, even if we did share any DNA, they would still have no part in my decision making process in the choices I make in my life, with my work, and with my family. I did feel harassed again. I’m 94.5% Chinese. Of that I’m 3% Hmong. I have nothing against Hmong clans or culture. But I am not a part of this Hmong clan system. Nobody has any right to intimidate or harass me! I went to the police station and updated my report.
A woman named Mai Tou Vaj has been harassing me online. I also reported her to the EGPD but I’m sure that it’s a fake handle and that this is not her real name. Mai Tou Vaj has said in Facebook posts that she knows Steve Ly and his wife.
A Dr. Firdos Sheikh was also harassing me online. I have screen shots of her harassing me on Bobbie Singh-Allen’s page. She is a known associate of Steve Ly. I Googled her and she was arrested and has charges against her for keeping two illegal immigrants in her home against their will. There is a settlement conference in September 2020.
UPDATE: Dr. Firdos Sheikh used to work work at CNU School of Medicine, but they said they haven’t had anything to do with her since 2017. I am glad she no longer works there. Her Linkedin is misleading as it appears to indicate she still works there.
From Sac Bee:
“An Elk Grove woman has been indicted by a federal grand jury for hiding two non-citizens on her property and forcing them into labor for nearly five years, the U.S. Department of Justice announced Friday.
Dr. Firdos Sheikh, a neurologist, was indicted on two counts of forced labor, two counts of alien harboring for financial gain, one count of obstructing a forced labor investigation and one count of making false statements to federal agents, acting Assistant Attorney General John Gore said in a news release.”
I’m so angry, upset, and confused. I lost my baby! It would have been our third child. I lost it the day after I received the threatening phone call and the same day the guy from the Hmong clan called me. IT’S SO UNFAIR! The fetus was stable! I know it was the stress of being threatened and harassed that caused this miscarriage. There was no reason for me to miscarry. For the sake of my unborn child, I need to come forward with this because people need to know. I wouldn’t wish this pain on anybody!
My family went into hiding for a few days. We are interviewing bodyguards. This is just all so surreal. I wouldn’t wish this on anybody. If this can happen to me it, it can happen to anybody. I believe Elk Grove needs new leadership. Mayor Steve Ly told me that he didn’t have anything to do with what happened to me. But what I noticed was that, 1) he still failed to denounce the fact that Hmong men are threatening me and Linda other women 2) that when I was being threatened and harassed that he NEVER told people outright in a post, “LEAVE JAX ALONE!” Mayor Ly, never stood up and said on Facebook, “Threatening Jax or Linda is wrong and whoever is doing it needs to stop because I don’t want this!” In fact some of his known associates like Dr. Firdos Sheikh, who is currently charged with several crimes and has her medical license in jeopardy, have been relentless in their harassment. I checked Mayor Ly’s page and I didn’t see him telling Dr. Firdos Sheikh or anybody to leave me alone.
Finally, Mayor Ly kept saying (to Elk Grove Citizen, online, and to other news sources) that he isn’t going to denounce his clan because his clan is his family. Nobody was asking him to do that. We are simply asking that Hmong men or a patriarchal system not be used to cower, intimidate, or threaten women! I AM CHINESE AND NOT A PART OF THIS WHOLE HMONG CLAN THING SO WHY AM I GETTING THREATENED AND INTIMIDATED?! And even if I were part of a Hmong clan, it would still be wrong to use this system to threatened and intimidate me!
Someone needs to step up and do something. I hope and pray other people who are in my situation and who have been in my shoes have the courage to come forward. I’m scared out of my mind but I’m coming forward, because nothing will change if I don’t.
I want to thank Linda Vwj, Bobbie Singh-Allen, and Nancy Chiares Espinoza, for coming forward with your own stories to support me. Jaclyn Moreno ran on the same slate as Mayor Ly in the last election, but she did the right thing and came forward. I can’t imagine how hard that was. But Jaclyn, thank you from the bottom of my heart. Thank you Linda, Bobbie, Nancy, and Jaclyn for having my back and giving me the courage to come forward. I encourage other women to come forward. I’ve talked to some of you so I know that you exist. Now is the time! Elk Grove needs new leadership! I will do everything within my power (without breaking any laws) and by telling the truth to make that happen! I WILL NOT BE SILENCED!!
